We have a big name for our church that often confuses people! It's hard to pronounce too.
"Evangelical" refers to our commitment to the truth of the Scriptures as our guide in faith and how we live our lives. It also means we believe in the death, burial and resurrection of Jesus Christ as the only basis on which, by God's grace, we can receive eternal life.
"Free" in our name always confuses people too. Does it mean we don't take offerings on Sunday morning? No, we take offerings and you don't have to give anything to be part of our church. Free means much more than money.
"Free" means that there was a time in history that people weren't allowed freedom in worship. There were State Churches in Europe where the political rulers forced people to attend the government churches and practice their faith the way the politicians told them to. The Free Church movement was born when brave men and women rebelled against the government and broke away from the State Church, often at the cost of going to jail, or even their lives.
Today in our church the word "Free" in our name means that each church, like ours in Prince George, are free to decide who will be their pastor, how the church will be run, and how much money will be spent on keeping the church going.
The Free Church is the most non - denominational denomination in the world, largely because we don't ever want to go back to the days when politicians told us from above how to run things in the church.
